PROJECT BRIEF FOR MANCHESTER ARENA
Marshalls International’s relationship with Manchester Arena dates back to the venue’s opening in 1995, when the company supplied the original ice hockey barrier system, Jet Ice paints and IIHF-standard goal frames for what was then the Nynex Arena.
That same year, our Managing Director, Mark Johnson, was appointed Field Operations Manager at the arena, responsible for all ice operations and event floor conversions. Mark‘s relationship with Marshalls International had already begun several years earlier through Phil Waite, having worked together while Mark was at Blackburn Ice Arena. In 1995, Mark also worked for Marshalls International as an Olympia ice resurfacer operator during the World Figure Skating Championships in Birmingham.
Manchester Arena ceased ice hockey operations in 2002, bringing an end to an era for one of the UK’s premier multi-purpose ice venues.
WHAT WE DID RECENTLY
In April 2026, it was announced that ice hockey would return to Manchester Arena, with the Manchester Storm making the venue its new home. Marshalls International was once again selected as the arena’s trusted partner, providing a complete package of specialist ice rink equipment and infrastructure.
For Mark Johnson, the project represents a true full-circle moment. Having left Manchester Arena in 1998 after helping establish its ice operations, he now returns over 25 years later as Managing Director of Marshalls International, leading the delivery of the equipment and infrastructure that will welcome professional ice hockey back to the arena.
The return of ice to Manchester Arena is not only a landmark project for Marshalls International but also a reflection of more than 40 years of experience delivering complete solutions for some of the UK’s most prestigious ice sports venues.
